The news comes two days after fellow British rockers Coldplay announced that their latest single, Violet Hill, would be free to download for one week.

And just last week Metallica announced that they would consider replicating the free download alternative when their studio contract expires, having been one of the bands key in the demise of Napster several years ago.

Thom Yorke, Radiohead's frontman, told the Hollywood Reporter that it was a one-off response to allow fans to download their latest album In Rainbows.

"It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do. I don't think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again. It was a moment in time," Yorke said.

The band have remained quiet about the success of their 'honesty box' scheme.
