The 'classical music bible' includes contributions from composers such as Rachmaninov and Barbirolli.

The archive includes more than 100,000 articles and thousands of reviews and interviews. It will be accessible for free, online, this September.

"It is going to be an indispensable guide for anyone who is remotely interested in classical music," said editor James Inverne.

The 85-year-old magazine also announced that it will be entering the commercial download market. This will happen in January 2009 and will be supplemented by a mail-order service.

The magazine was founded by Compton Mackenzie in 1923 and has been published monthly ever since.
