Research has found that people using the mobile web visit social networks more than any other type of site.
Some 41 per cent of traffic on the mobile web globally goes to social networks, with Facebook, Bebo and FaceParty among the top 10 sites accessed from mobile devices by people in the UK.
The research from software company Opera also found that the UK was the world leader in mobile email, with 11 per cent of traffic from mobile devices going to mobile email sites.
Opera said the research showed people were using the web on their mobiles for similar reasons that they access the web from their desktop PCs.
"I find it reassuring to see that there is a decreasing distinction between the types of web content people use on the mobile device - it really is one web, with people using whichever device they choose to connect to that web," said Opera's Jon von Tetzchner.
