Digital radio The number of people who listen to radio via the internet has increased to 14.5 million, according to new figures.

Research compiled by Rajar, the organisation which records listenership figures, showed that 2.5 million more people were tuning into the radio via the web since November 2007.

In a typical week, 9.4 million people listen to the radio via the internet either live or through a 'Listen Again' service.

The survey also highlighted the growing popularity of podcasts. More than six million people downloaded a podcast, up by 1.6 million since the last survey.

Comedy and music are top of most surfers lists with the average surfer subscribing to three podcasts and spending over an hour per week listening to them.

iTunes remains the most popular software for downloading podcasts with almost three quarters of podcast subscribers using Apple's service. Nearly 80 per cent of surfers listen via their PC while 66 per cent use their MP3 player.
