News > Apple claims iPhone 3G success

Apple claims iPhone 3G success
July 14, 2008
Web User

The iPhone could stifle innovation, an academic has claimed Apple has hailed the launch of the iPhone 3G as a success, despite widely reported problems with activation in the UK and US.

Messaging from Apple makes no mention of problems encountered on the day of the launch which meant thousands of customers were unable to take their newly purchased iPhones home.

Instead, it focuses on sales figures, saying that it had sold one million handsets over the weekend.

"iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive.

"It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world," Jobs continued.

Activation service glitches meant that buyers in the UK and US had problems, leading to frustration for customers.

Network operator O2 had also suffered problems earlier in the week when the number of people attempting to pre-order their iPhone 3G online made its website crash.

The newly launched App Store, where iPhone customers can get their hands on third-party applications for the device, saw 10 million downloads over the weekend, according to Apple.
