Web boosts Premier League's appeal July 23, 2008 Web User
The internet has become a vital tool in the Premier League's attempt to boost its profile overseas.
According to web analysis firm comScore, the majority of traffic to the sites of the 'big four' Premier League clubs – Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea – now originates from outside of the UK.
And the Premierleague.com website gets only 45 per cent of its traffic from the UK, with 28 per cent from the Asia Pacific region, 13 per cent from the rest of Europe, six per cent from North America, six per cent from the Middle East and Africa, and two per cent from Latin America.
The company said that this proved that the controversial '39th game' idea, where an extra game would be added to the season and played outside of the UK, would attract a lot of interest if it were to happen.
ComScore analyst Jamie Gavin said: "It makes sense that the Football Association would be considering staging an additional ten games per season overseas to help raise the profile of the other clubs.
"Generating additional exposure of these teams across other continents will help establish the Premiership as a sports league with a truly global fan base," he continued.
