Janet Jackson breaks net records February 4, 2004 Veronique De Freitas
Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" has become one of the most-searched for events in the history of the internet, claims Lycos.
According to Lycos US, Janet Jackson's breast-baring incident has generated as much web search activity as the 11 September attacks on America.
Janet's breast was revealed on US television during a half-time performance at the Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake after he ripped off part of her bodice.
Lycos's Top 50 list, which reveals the most popular people, places and things that web users are searching for online, reports that prior to this week, the most-searched event over a one-day period was the September 11 attack.
Aaron Schatz, writer of The Lycos 50, said: "On Monday, Janet Jackson and the halftime show received 60 times as many searches as the Paris Hilton sex tape and 80 times as many searches as Britney Spears. It also received five times as many searches as the day the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded."
Yahoo UK's Buzz Index, which rates the popularity of search terms, shows that the US singer is the top subject UK surfers are searching for today.
Janet Jackson has released a videotaped apology for the Super Bowl incident. The singer said: "The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my half-time show performance was made after final rehearsals. I am really sorry if I offended anyone. That was truly not my intention."
