With acres of press coverage and over four million Google hits, the iPod Mini certainly needs no introduction. It has quickly become the standard for medium-capacity MP3 players, with other companies rushing to imitate its svelte design and elegant interface. Apple has responded to the attack of the clones with the new version of the Mini, which boosts the storage capacity from 4GB to 6GB and the battery life from eight hours to 18. Strangely (or perhaps not, considering the booming iPod accessories industry), no new features have been added so you'll still need to splash out extra for an FM radio or voice recorder. That said, you do get a calendar, contacts book and to-do list, as well as four fun games.

Verdict
Where the Mini reigns supreme is in its simplicity: no other player comes close for sheer user-friendliness, from its logical menu system to the automatic synchronisation with iTunes when you connect it to your PC or Mac. The exclusive compatibility with Apple's online music store has been criticised (as has the lack of WMA support), but with more than one million tracks to choose from, you're unlikely to need anything more. Audio quality is better than ever for the 6GB version, though you may opt to change the mugger-enticing earphones.
