Although Mozy may be something of a wild card to many Web User readers who haven't heard of the online back-up service, it stormed into first place in our tests. The proposition is similar to the more familiar Carbonite: unlimited storage capacity for a very low price, complete with automated software that will perform all the dull tasks for you.

Pricing is set at $59.40 (about £29) per year. Once you've signed up, you get a nice-looking introduction to using the system and making your initial back-up. This could take some time, depending on the number of files you've got – remember that broadband upload speed is significantly slower than download speed. Once you've done this, the attractive screens disappear and you're left with a very businesslike interface, which looks a lot like Windows Explorer. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this – Mozy is lean and mean.

The beauty with Mozy is that when you come to restore files, you're overwhelmed by potential options. Although the 'send me the files on a DVD' option is restricted to the US, there are other useful alternatives: request the files you want as a downloadable zip file; right-click in any folder to see what files are archived for it and drag them back accordingly; or click on My Computer and see your entire back-up as a virtual disk.
It's the Windows integration, and the ease and choice of restoration, that really gives Mozy the edge, even though it's a tad more expensive than Carbonite.
