Although something of a stalwart of compression in the early days of PCs, PKZip is not a name that springs to most minds when thinking of ZIP tools nowadays. The program is only capable of creating ZIP files, but can decompress many other formats. Options are limited within the program – archives can be encrypted and emailed but there is no self-extracting option and there is little scope for balancing compression levels with system performance.

A few years ago, PKware was ahead of the game, but PKZip shows that its tools have since been overtaken.
