Although designed to slot together with a Sansa, SanDisk's own brand of MP3 player, this speaker set makes the grade for this test by also coming with the gubbins you need to plug any other player into it. It also comes with a discrete cover to hide the Sansa dock if you wish. It's a sizeable beast, about the same as a size 11 shoe if you're thinking of putting it into a suitcase, but it houses multiple speakers to offer audibly more sound depth than its smaller rivals.

The speakers can also run on batteries (four AA size) and, with a USB pass-through cable, you can use it to upload music to a Sansa player. But best of all is the price: all this for just £35.
