Spy Sweeper is another program that comes with an excellent pedigree, a slick installation and a great user interface. Oddly however, it does try to install an IE toolbar – precisely what people installing the package might be trying to get away from. That aside, Spy Sweeper offers comprehensive real-time detection, a file scanner and the ability to remove software.

As it stands, the real-time protection passed all of our tests, warning or offering to block potentially unwanted system changes. The warnings could be considered a little obtrusive, but plenty of information is given and, considering the threats, the alerts are justified. The file scan isn't quite as slick; again obtrusive and unnecessary warnings are thrown up, but it did detect all the threats. The main downside, of course, is that you'll have to pay about £30 for it.
