iRiver has long been nibbling at Apple's slice of the portable audio market and the H10 is probably its strongest effort yet. Though slightly larger than the Mini and Micro, it weighs a mere 96g and is slim enough to slide into the tightest of pockets. There are four tasteful shades to choose from – Trance Red, Lounge Gray, Triple Platinum and Remix Blue (pictured) – and an amazing array of features. Besides storing and playing up to 150 hours of music (MP3 or WMA), the 5GB H10 lets you listen to and record from FM radio, read e-books and other text files, and encode voice notes directly into MP3 format via its built-in microphone. Most notably, the player sports a 1.5in colour screen for displaying digital photos, with the ability to view them as a slideshow.

Verdict
Unlike some iRiver models, the H10 is relatively simple to use, with clearly-illustrated menu options and a touchpad for scrolling through long lists of songs or adjusting the volume. You can create playlists of your favourite tracks on the fly and employ the extensive equaliser settings to fine-tune the audio. Battery life is a respectable 12 hours; though expect much less with the LCD screen in constant use.
